Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 9-inch round cake pans with parchment paper.
  2. Whisk together the flour, cornstarch, baking powder, and salt in a large mixing bowl.
  3. Cream together the sugar and eggs until thick and pale. Gradually add the oil, milk, and vanilla.
  4. Fold the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients gently until just combined.
  5. Divide the batter between the prepared pans and bake for 25-30 minutes.
  6. Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
  7. Prepare the simple syrup by dissolving the sugar in water over medium heat.
  8. Beat the softened butter and gradually add powdered sugar and heavy cream until fluffy.
  9. Brush each cooled layer with simple syrup, frost between layers, and apply a crumb coat.
