- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x13 inch baking dish with melted butter.
- In a large skillet, cook ground beef and chopped onion over medium heat for 5-7 minutes until the beef is no longer pink.
- Add garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper to the beef mixture; cook for 2-3 minutes until aromatic.
- Layer half of the thinly sliced potatoes evenly in the greased baking dish.
- Spoon half of the seasoned beef mixture over the potato layer.
- Add remaining sliced potatoes, then top with the rest of the beef mixture.
- In a bowl, mix cream of mushroom soup and milk until smooth; pour over the casserole.
- Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese on top.
- Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes; remove foil and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes.
- Allow to rest for 5-10 minutes before serving.
