Ingredients

For the Beef
  • 1 pound Beef (Sirloin Steak or Chuck Roast) Slice thinly against the grain for best texture.
For the Sauce
  • 1 cup Beef Stock Substitute with low-sodium beef broth for less salt.
  • ½ cup Soy Sauce Use tamari for a gluten-free option.
  • ¼ cup Brown Sugar Optional substitutions include honey or coconut sugar.
  • 2 tablespoons Sesame Oil Use olive oil if unavailable.
  • 4 cloves Minced Garlic Fresh garlic is preferable; jarred garlic works in a pinch.
For the Vegetables
  • 4 cups Frozen Broccoli Florets Fresh broccoli can be used but must be added differently.
For the Thickener
  • 2 tablespoons Cornstarch Mix with cold water before adding to prevent clumping.

Equipment

  • Slow Cooker

Method

Preparation Steps
  1. In your slow cooker, whisk together beef stock, soy sauce, brown sugar, sesame oil, and minced garlic to create the sauce.
  2. Thinly slice the beef against the grain and place it in the slow cooker, tossing to coat in the sauce.
  3. Cover and cook on low heat for 5 hours.
  4. Prepare a cornstarch slurry by mixing cornstarch with cold water. Stir this mixture into the slow cooker to thicken the sauce.
  5. Gently scatter the frozen broccoli florets over the beef and stir carefully. Cover and cook for another 30 minutes.
  6. Serve hot over rice or noodles and garnish with sesame seeds or green onions.
