Ingredients

For the Crust
  • 2 cups All-Purpose Flour Substitute with gluten-free flour for a gluten-free option
  • 1 cup Unsalted Butter Keep it cold for best results, or use margarine if needed
  • 6 tablespoons Cold Water Add gradually until the dough holds together
For the Filling
  • 1 pound Ground Beef Use lean beef (85-90%) to cut down on grease or substitute with ground turkey
  • 1 pound Italian Sausage Use mild or spicy varieties
  • 1 large Onion Yellow or white onions work well
  • 2 cloves Garlic Freshly minced is ideal
  • 1 tablespoon Italian Seasoning Combine dried basil, oregano, and thyme if you don't have it
  • 1 cup Tomato Sauce Opt for a rich marinara to prevent a soggy crust
For the Cheese Topping
  • 2 cups Shredded Mozzarella Cheese Can be exchanged with provolone for a different flavor
  • 1 cup Shredded Cheddar Cheese Gruyère is an excellent alternative for a nutty taste
  • 1 cup Pepperoni Try thick slices or turkey pepperoni for a lighter option
  • 1/2 cup Grated Parmesan Cheese Pecorino Romano can enhance the flavor depth
  • 1 teaspoon Dried Oregano Mixed Italian herbs make a suitable substitute

Equipment

  • Pie dish
  • large skillet
  • Oven
  • Mixing Bowl

Method

Preparation Steps
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a deep pie dish.
  2. Roll out your dough on a floured surface until 1/4 inch thick and fit it into the greased pie dish. Blind-bake the crust for 7-8 minutes until lightly golden.
  3. In a large skillet over medium heat, add ground beef and cook until browned, about 5-7 minutes. Add Italian sausage and cook until no pink remains. Drain excess grease.
  4. Lower heat to medium-low, add chopped onion and minced garlic, sauté for 3-4 minutes until onion is translucent. Stir in Italian seasoning and ½ cup of tomato sauce.
  5. Start assembling the pie with a layer of remaining tomato sauce on the pre-baked crust, followed by half of the meat mixture, pepperoni, and half of the mozzarella cheese. Repeat layers.
  6. Place the assembled pie in the oven and bake for 25-30 minutes until cheese is bubbly and top is golden.
  7. Let the pie rest for about 10 minutes before slicing to allow layers to set.
  8. Slice into generous pieces and serve warm with a side salad or garlic bread.
