  • 2 tablespoons Unsalted butter for greasing dish
For the Topping
  • 1/4 cup Granulated sugar for caramelizing

Step‑by‑Step Instructions
  1. Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with unsalted butter. Lay sliced French bread in a single layer, slightly overlapping.
  2. In a mixing bowl, whisk together eggs, half-and-half, whole milk, vanilla extract, granulated sugar, ground cinnamon, and optional nutmeg until smooth.
  3. Pour the custard over the arranged bread slices, pressing gently to coat. Let soak for 10-15 minutes.
  4. Cover tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight, or at least 8 hours.
  5. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Dot soaked bread with small pieces of butter and bake for 35-40 minutes.
  6. After baking, let cool slightly, then sprinkle granulated sugar over the top. Caramelize using a kitchen torch or under a broiler.
  7. Cool slightly, slice, and serve warm with maple syrup and fresh berries or whipped cream.
