Ingredients

For the Blueberry Mixture
  • 1 cup Blueberries Fresh or frozen works beautifully.
For the Cream Cheese Layer
  • 8 oz Cream Cheese Philadelphia brand is preferred for consistency.
  • 1 cup Powdered Sugar Granulated sugar can be used but may alter texture.
For the Egg Custard
  • 2 cups Milk Whole milk is best for flavor.
  • 8 large Eggs Ensure they are at room temperature for better mixing.
  • 1 tbsp Vanilla Extract Opt for pure extract for the best results.
  • 1 tsp Cinnamon Provides warmth and depth.
  • 1/2 tsp Nutmeg Complements cinnamon.
For the Bread Base
  • 2 loaves French Bread Cubed; day-old bread absorbs the custard best.

Equipment

  • Mixing Bowl
  • Baking dish
  • Whisk

Method

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. In a mixing bowl, blend the cream cheese, powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth and creamy. Fold in blueberries.
  2. Butter the bottom of a 10x14-inch baking dish. Layer half of the cubed French bread in the dish.
  3. Spread the cream cheese mixture over the bread layer evenly. Add remaining bread cubes on top, pressing down gently.
  4. Whisk together milk, eggs, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and nutmeg until combined. Pour the mixture over the layered bread, ensuring each piece is soaked.
  5. Sprinkle an additional cup of blueberries over the top. Cover with foil and refrigerate for at least 8 hours or overnight.
  6. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  7. Bake covered for 45 minutes. Remove foil and bake for an additional 30 minutes, until the top is golden brown.
  8. Allow to cool slightly for 10-15 minutes before slicing. Serve warm with powdered sugar or maple syrup.
